Frequently asked questions
What does a 'modern ladies choir' mean?
For starters we are ladies only, of all ages! We are modern with regards to our choice of repertoire, the sound we make and some would say in the way we learn the songs. We don't use backing tracks though - we are 100% live!
What sort of songs do you sing?
A mixture! See our repertoire past and present here.
Do I have to audition?
No!
I've never really sung before.....??
That's ok! There is safety in numbers and you will be fine. Singing in a group is incredibly uplifting and the beauty of it is, that you don't have to be a brilliant singer to do it. Your voice won't get any better unless you use it. The more you sing, the better you get! Use it or lose it! Give it a try!
But I can't sing.
That is unlikely! I will get you singing. I follow the Estill method of voice training and some simple exercises at the start of rehearsals will work wonders. Confidence also helps - which will come with time! If you don't start singing, you won't get any better!
Will I have the opportunity to sing a solo?
No, we don't usually have soloists.
I read music. Can I use the sheet music?
No. I teach the songs by ear. I want everyone to be on an even footing in rehearsals. For some music-readers, learning by ear is quite a challenge to begin with - but it's a good challenge, a great skill to have and you will adapt! It is much easier for a music-reader to read the words than a non-music reader to read the music.
Is inTune just for women?
Yes. It wasn't the original intention but there are many opportunities for men to sing in Cornwall and now inTune is for female voices only.
Can children sing in the choir?
This is an adult choir, 18+. However - I will consider teenagers if they are particularly keen and are accompanied by a paying parent/guardian following a discussion with me.
I don't have a babysitter, can I bring my children?
I am really sorry, but no. This is an adult environment and for many is a break from the kids and commitments! A few of my members have had babies and have brought their newborn along which is lovely and this works just fine until about 3 months old. Babies and children over this age I ask you to please make alternative arrangements.
How will rehearsals run?
Rehearsals are to start right on the dot at 7pm and we will sing through until 8.30pm. The last rehearsal of each half term we have a bit of a social with a cuppa and cake. Each section takes it in turn to host this.
Do we learn choreography?
No. Let's focus on the singing!
Are there rehearsals in the school holidays?
No. I run for usually 36 or 37 weeks of the year depending on how the dates work out, during term time. Gigs also take place during term time only unless there is a very exciting exception.
Do I have to perform?
No, you don't have to. If you just want to come along to sing every week that is fine. However, the choirs do enjoy coming together to do public performances and we are most definitely a performance choir. Most people will enjoy to have the opportunity to show friends and family what they have achieved! However, due to the large membership it is not a huge commitment or even a requirement and performances will not take over and become a strain. Many members have been reluctant to perform - but gave it a go and haven't looked back! It's a brilliant buzz. It also means some awesome days out often with free entry to some great venues and events!
What is the cost?

I'm not sure I can commit to coming every week.
That's ok - it is a big ask to come along every week and some people simply can't. If you can't make a rehearsal or 2 (or 3!) but would like to stay in the loop, there are practise tracks available either through Dropbox or an app called ChorusClass, with me singing the individual parts. So you can practise at home if you wish! However, I do encourage you to attend when you have no decent reason not to. The choir overall benefits from your presence and if you are feeling a bit down or tired, it will give you a boost! You are of course able to attend one of the other choirs instead so it is still possible to get your inTune fix if you can't make your usual session and many members take me up on this. Equally, you can come along twice!
